In his eight years as a college admissions counselor, Hugh has helped a wide range of students make the most of high school and gain acceptance to best-fit colleges. Whether you are still deciding on a future major or have a specific goal in mind—from engineering to performing arts, from pre-med to politics—Hugh brings an individualized approach and depth of experience to support your college search and application process from beginning to end.
Prior to his college admissions counseling, Hugh earned a PhD in English from Northwestern University and taught English at Northwestern and George Washington University, as well as Washington DC schools St. Albans and Georgetown Day. His teaching background informs his work with college essays and applications, where he encourages students to develop their voices, draft with care and write with impact.
Hugh’s advising is also grounded in the knowledge that career paths are rarely straight lines. He has been a flea market manager, a drummer in touring rock bands, and a published author. His first book, a study of popular novel-reading in America, was released by the University of Virginia Press in fall 2018.
When he’s not advising students, Hugh enjoys spending time with his family, reading, and slow-cooking barbecue in his backyard.
Hugh is an active member of the National Association for College Admission Counseling (NACAC) and the Potomac and Chesapeake Association for College Admissions Counseling (PCACAC).
